Are You As Good A Strategist As George On Australian Survivor?

Are You As Good A Strategist As George On Australian Survivor?

Why it helps to be thinking 3 moves ahead on your small business chess board
I don't know about you but I'm really tired of the over use of the words 'best ever' by every TV station advertising the upcoming episode of their latest and greatest reality TV show.

Because all they really mean is it's the best episode ever.... until the next one!

Now I rarely watch reality TV shows unless they've got a business slant like Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares or Dragon's Den to name a few.

My two exceptions are Masterchef and Australian Survivor.

Masterchef because I love seeing the amazing dishes people create and the camaraderie amongst contestants rather than the ruthlessness, bullying and backstabbing in all the other reality TV competition shows.

And I often catch up on Australian Survivor because as a natural problem solver, I like seeing how people outwit and outplay each other throughout the game.

Now last Sunday's episode of Australian Survivor was advertised as the best ever in the history of Survivor which is a huge claim.

But curiosity got the better of me and I watched it live, and what played out turned into great content for this blog.

FOCUS: BE AN INFLUENTIAL STRATEGIST

Well I have to say – it truly lived up to the hype.

What fascinated me was how one person ('King George') influenced every part of the Tribal Council outcome, even to the point of thinking quickly to still get the outcome he wanted for his game (strategy) when an unexpected twist was thrown at the Tribe.

Rather than spoil it for you, I'd encourage you to watch this episode to see how things really played out.

What was evident is how strategic a thinker George is that he can see how things could and will play out, 3 – 6 moves ahead of everyone else.

This skill as well as thinking on your feet is critical to running a successful small business so you don't just react to what's been thrown at you from staff, customers, competitors, government changes, meeting requests, email etc.

Taking the time (even just a few moments) to draw breath and think about what this XYZ means..... for you, your team and your business allows you to make more strategic and measured decisions.
What's Next?
So are you like 'King George' – able to see a few moves ahead on your small business chess board?

Like George, can you also quickly think strategically, rally the team and make confident and measured decisions to benefit your small business?

When was the last time you popped your head up from your phone or computer to get a helicopter view of what's really happening in your small business?

If it's been a while, then I suggest grabbing your favourite beverage and watch this episode to determine what you have to do to be as strategic an operator as George.

And here's my final thought:

Now please don't think I condone the behaviour which occurs on Survivor.

I don't but I understand that's the nature of the GAME and it's a TV Show which is edited to the hilt – Survivor is not LIFE!

Of course I don't like George's arrogance but I do admire how his brain thinks – both strategically and as a problem solver; and his ability to influence other player's – to the benefit of his long game.

Because these are skills every small business including me needs to nurture – just in a positive rather than destructive way.
