What's your strategy when your small business loses power?
As many of us (including me) are preparing for Tropical Cyclone Alfred, I thought I'd share what I did years ago when the power went out.

Preparation is key and you don't realise how dependent on power you are until it's off.

SCENARIO

Imagine you're working away at your computer, getting lots done, when suddenly, with no warning, your computer shuts downs because you've lost power.

A call to Energex confirmed this was not a little problem, meaning the power could be out for hours.

While you wonder what you would do, here's what I did.
FOCUS:  FOUNDATION BRICKS #2 AND #5:
Productivity and Performance
No sweat I think, I'll continue working on the IPAD to send some emails.

Nope, can't do that as the addresses I want are on the desktop hard drive.

Note: This was before I changed to a laptop and using One Drive on Microsoft 365

Okay I'll keep working on the presentation I was developing.

Nope, can't do that either as I hadn't moved it to Dropbox before the power cut out.

I know, I'll make a coffee and think about my options.

#@#@ Nope can't do that either.

And so it continued. Everything I thought of I couldn't do because I had no power and no desktop computer.

So after a few grumbles because I really needed that coffee, I thought:

'what an opportunity to step away from the day to day and use the time to work on my business rather than in it'.

With pens and butcher's paper in hand, I set about brainstorming my new business programs for next year, and it was such a productive 2 hours because there were no other distractions eg email, jumping from task to task etc.

Now whenever anything happens unexpectedly, I always reflect on why it happened and could I do anything differently.

What's Next?
Here's my 3 lessons from my power outage:

πŸ’‘  Move more documents to cloud based storage so I have access whenever I need it

πŸ’‘   Allocate time every day, even for 15 minutes, and exchange the technology for pen and paper to brainstorm ideas to improve my business

πŸ’‘   Have an alternative which can securely store my database contacts

And here's my final thought:

Would your power outage strategy be different to mine?

Maybe you would call your team into a boardroom or go to a park to brainstorm new ideas.

So here's my challenge for you:

How can you 'lose power' once a week to gain the benefits of 'old school' technology and the magic of unallocated time?

Cheers
